OER Materials for African American Studies

Description: Ever felt like you should be better at feminism? Join comedian Deborah Frances-White and her guests for this comedy podcast, recorded in front of a live audience. Each week they discuss our noble goals as 21st century feminists and the hypocrisies and insecurities that undermine them. Deborah Frances-White is the 2016 Writers' Guild Award Winner for Best Radio Comedy for her hit BBC Radio 4 series Deborah Frances-White Rolls the Dice. She is an Edinburgh Fringe regular, a screenwriter and is in huge demand for her corporate seminars.

Description: Too often, women are thought of as a monolithic bloc, and they were often discussed that way throughout the 2016 election. But women are in fact divided on major issues. Liz Plank (a progressive) and Hitha Herzog (a conservative) are friends who get along, but don't always agree. Together, they cover the complicated, multifaceted, intersectional debates that make up the life of the modern American women. Produced by Vox Media Podcast Network.

Description: PICTURE A SCIENTIST is a documentary film chronicling the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. A biologist, a chemist and a geologist lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights to revolutionize the culture of science. From cramped laboratories to spectacular field sites, we also encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

Description: The unwritten rules governing the traditional activities of men and women are sharply but subtly defined. Women’s work has traditionally been repetitive and ongoing, and its end result short-lived and impermanent. In contrast, the activities of men are traditionally long-lived, durable, or permanent. This thought-provoking video explores numerous and diverse instances of this often unrecognized but pervasive gender (and, often, racial) division and examines their causes and social consequences. Designed for use in a broad range of disciplines, this engaging production features illuminating first-hand testimony by college students and case studies drawn from topics that will be immediately familiar to students. 'Monuments Are for Men' is a powerful resource for any instructor who wishes to stimulate lively class discussion on issues surrounding the social construction of gender activities and on the ways that these patterns of activities are perpetuated in contemporary American culture. It was produced by and features Prof. Lynn Lovdal, whose earlier video, 'Sexism in Language,' is used in courses in speech, interpersonal communication, and gender studies at hundreds of colleges nationwide.
