Transitioning from RefWorks: Import to Zotero

Import Citations from RefWorks to Zotero

Export your citations from RefWorks using the instructions provided on the "Export Citations from RefWorks" tab. Locate the folder where your exported files were saved.

  1. Log into your Zotero desktop application.
  2. On the toolbar, go to File > Import.

  3. A window asking "Where do you want to import from?" will pop up. Select "A file" and click Next.

  5. A dialogue box with the option "Place imported collections and items into a new collection" will appear. You have two choices:

If you want to recreate your folder system from RefWorks, leave this option checked. Zotero will place your citations into a new, automatically created folder (called collection in Zotero) that has the same name as the file that you imported.

Or, uncheck this box if you would prefer to import all your citations into the unfiled area of Zotero called "My Library."

Once you have made your selection, click Next.

  6. Your citations are available for use inside Zotero.
