RefWorks Access Ends in September 2021
The APSU Library subscription to RefWorks ends on September 30, 2021. What now?
All current RefWorks users (including alumni) will need to move their references to another citation manager. Unfortunately, only citations can be migrated. PDFs and any other attachments will not automatically transfer and will need to be reattached separately.
APSU librarians recommend migrating your references or citations to one of the free products below. Choose from the tabs on this guide for instructions on how to export citations from RefWorks and to import them into the new citation manager of your choice.
EndNote Basic (Online)
EndNote basic is a limited reference management solution that is only available online. EndNote Basic users can create an online library with a maximum of 50,000 references and up to 2GB of attachments. The free version of EndNote basic has 21 styles and a limited number of filters and connection files. It includes a "Cite While You Write" plugin for Word and a "Capture Reference" tool for web browsers. Bibliographies and Works Cited can be formatted directly in the online interface.
Mendeley is a tool that enables you to manage citations and PDFs. It gives you the ability to highlight and annotate saved PDFs. A free Mendeley account receives 2GB personal cloud storage and up to 5 private groups of up to 25 collaborators for sharing. Install Mendeley Desktop
to access additional features and storage options or try the new download for Mendeley Reference Manager
. Files added though these desktop clients will sync with your web account and they include a plugin for Word, so you can easily create citations and/or bibliographies as you write your papers. The plugin may be required to format bibliographies and create works cited.
Zotero is a tool that helps you organize your citations. It works as a stand-alone client and has connectors for most browsers to help you collect research citations from the web. Zotero allows you to attach PDFs, notes, and images to your citations; organize them into collections for different projects; and create bibliographies. ZoteroBib
online is also available if you need to create a quick bibliography.
Which Citation Manager Should I Choose?
Endnote Basic, Medeley, and Zotero should all help you store, share, and format citations. However, there are differences in citation import methods, compatibility with word processing systems, type of storage, and user interface.
