Ed.D. in Educational Leadership: APA Avoiding Plagiarism Resources

Tips for Avoiding Plagiarism

  • Synthesize information in your own words then cite the original author
  • Read first then summarize information in your own words without looking at the original work
  • When in doubt cite
  • Read your work and after each thought ask yourself:
    • Who thought that?
    • Where did I learn that?
    • Who said this?
  • Combine citations to strengthen your points. If you have multiple resources supporting your statements cite those sources together to strengthen and support your synthesis
  • Do not use someone else's exact words
  • Paraphrase and synthesize the original source information avoid using direct quotes unless necessary
  • Avoid idea plagiarism by citing the source of the original idea
