Woodward Library's Makerspace is open to all faculty, staff, students, and community members. The makerspace contains 3D printers, sticker makers, sublimation and plotter printers, sewing machines, and much, much more!
What is the makerspace?
A makerspace is a collaborative, hands-on environment that provides tools, materials, and guidance for people to explore ideas, learn new skills, and bring their creative projects to life. It's designed to support DIY projects in technology, crafts, engineering, art, and more. It's a space where innovation, experimentation, and curiosity are encouraged—no matter your age or experience level.
What is a maker?
A maker is anyone who:
- Embraces Curiosity: If you've ever thought, "How does this work?" you've got a maker mindset.
- Values Creativity: Makers love to imagine and design original solutions or artistic expressions.
- Collaborates and Shares: They welcome feedback, exchange knowledge, and help others grow.
- Enjoys Problem-Solving: Makers see a challenge as an opportunity to learn something new.
Why be a maker?
Engaging in maker activities has many benefits to both the maker and their community!
Hands-On Learning: Making transforms theoretical concepts into tangible experiences, solidifying understanding and building confidence.
Empowerment and Agency: Using tools to create fosters a sense of ownership and pride in what you produce.
Innovation Culture: Makers who collaborate often drive bigger breakthroughs.
Personal Growth: Makers develop valuable skills like communication, project management, and critical thinking.
Community Building: Working side-by-side with others forges friendships and professional connections.
What does it cost and what do I get?
Students: Access is free. Some materials are donated and offered without cost, while others (like 3D printing filament) can be purchased within the makerspace or brought in by users.
Community members: Welcome for a $5 per month whole-family membership fee (supplies not included).
How do I begin?
Everyone who uses the makerspace must read and agree to our waiver before using the facilities. Once you have completed the waiver and turned it in to makerspace staff, you are free to utilize the makerspace! Come and ask us what you can do, or reach out for information about a project you already have in mind. We're here to help you accomplish your goals!
